Recent Form

The international break didn’t come at the best time for Newcastle. They looked to be building some optimism with the return from injuries of Allan Saint-Maximin and Andy Carroll, while Matthew Longstaff’s fine effort on his debut earned them a 1-0 win over Man Utd at St. James’ Park.

That result lifted them out of the relegation zone, but with just one point separating themselves from both Southampton and Everton in 17th and 18th respectively, they’ll know they need to kick on from that performance.

Chelsea have far greater reason to curse the break however seeing as they’d won four games on the bounce across all competitions prior to it.

Injury Concerns For Lampard

Meanwhile, they’ve had fitness setbacks to the likes of N’Golo Kante, Andreas Christensen, Mateo Kovacic and Reece James since they joined their respective nations.

Although key man Kante did train on Sunday, Frank Lampard will be cautious about his return as the World Cup winner has suffered a series of niggling setbacks in recent months.

Antonio Rudiger looks to be back from injury but will be severely lacking in any match fitness, so they’ll hope Christensen can get back fit to provide competition to Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma.

Lampard also has a concern over full-back Emerson, while he’ll be conscious of the fact that his charges have their all-important Champions League showdown with Ajax in Amsterdam next Wednesday, as they currently sit three points adrift of their opponents after two games.

Chelsea To Win And Both Teams To Score

The visitors have been woeful on the road this term as although they downed Mauricio Pochettino’s misfiring Spurs side back in August, they’ve suffered defeats in each of their other three trips by two or more goals.

In fact, since their return to the Premier League for the 2017/18 season, they’ve lost 13 of 14 trips to ‘Big Six’ teams, conceding two or more in 10 and as many as three or more in six, with their two such results at Stamford Bridge finishing 3-1 and 2-1 in 17/18 and 18/19 respectively.

However, it should be noted they’ve plundered exactly one goal in both their two such away days this term under Bruce, with one of those up against the best defence in the division in the shape of Liverpool, so they’re more than capable of getting onto the scoreboard.

It took a while for the Blues to get their first win at Stamford Bridge under Lampard, having lost two of four winless matches across all competitions to begin with, but they’ve since cruised past both Grimsby (7-1) and Brighton (2-0).

Moreover, each of those defeats came by just a single goal against Valencia in the Champions League and Liverpool domestically, which are hardly disastrous results, while excluding fixtures with the Reds, Leicester and Man Utd, they’ve won an impressive four of five unbeaten league outings.

Nonetheless, the Blues have still kept just one clean sheet from 12 outings in all competitions this term, with the Seagulls the only side that failed to score, although even they were unfortunate having hit the crossbar.

The Magpies meanwhile, have netted in six of their last eight matches in all tournaments and so we like their chances of registering another goal against one of the top sides, even if it’s just a consolation.
