Familiar territory
Saturday’s teatime kick off at Stamford Bridge will be the 58th meeting between Chelsea and Liverpool in all competitions since the turn of the millennium, making it the most played English fixture during that period. FA Cup Finals, Champions League semi finals and title deciders have all been contested in that time between the two sides, and there will be plenty at stake once again when the two heavyweights collide at Stamford Bridge.
Will history repeat itself?
The most recent meeting came just three days ago when the two teams met in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday night. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring for Liverpool before late goals from Emerson and a brilliant solo effort from Eden Hazard gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory. You can get odds of a repeat 2-1 Chelsea win on Saturday at 9/1.
Form Guide
Liverpool have made a perfect start in the Premier League this season, winning six out of six games and Jurgen Klopp takes his side to Stamford Bridge looking to make it seven wins on the bounce. Liverpool’s recent performances at Stamford Bridge should give them encouragement going into the game, having won two of their last three visits. You can back Liverpool to leave Stamford Bridge with all three points at odds of 11/8.
Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea meanwhile will be hoping to inflict a first league defeat on the Reds this season. Buoyed by their midweek victory against them, Chelsea will be looking to bounce back in the league after last weekend’s disappointing 0-0 draw with West Ham. A win for Chelsea will see them go ahead of Liverpool in the table, although defeat would leave them five points adrift at this early stage of the season.
In last season’s corresponding fixture Chelsea took all three points thanks to World Cup winner Oliver Giroud’s first half goal. If you think history will repeat itself again this weekend, then you can back Giroud to score the first goal at odds of 11/2. Chelsea to win 1-0 is also an interesting option at odds of 10-1.
Hazard warning
Eden Hazard scored a hat-trick in Chelsea’s last home Premier League game against Cardiff, taking his tally to five Premier League goals this season, as well as scoring the winning goal on Wednesday night. You can back him to score the opening goal at odds of 5/1.
A draw would probably suit both sides at this early stage of the season and if you want to hedge your bets, then you can get odds of a draw at 5/2.
Salah to deliver?
It’s been well documented that Chelsea have let an abundance of talent depart Stamford Bridge in recent years. Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Mo Salah have all gone onto become world class players at rival Premier League clubs. Perhaps it’s the Egyptian Salah though who has made the biggest impact since leaving Chelsea. Since he arrived at Liverpool last summer, he’s scored 35 league goals in just 42 league appearances. You can back Salah to score at any time against his former club at odds of 21/20.
