Recent Form
An exact replay of last years’ third round fixture between these two sides sees Forest travel south to Stamford Bridge to try and correct the 2-0 scoreline they succumbed to last time.
The Tricky Trees are ticking along nicely in the Championship and are currently looking in a solid position for a play-off spot, though Leeds and West Brom are a fair margin ahead of the rest of the pack in first and second respectively.
However, it hasn’t all been cheers for the Nottingham-based club this season with a run of three defeats from five winless matches between late November and Christmas, although the festivities have seemed to turned their form around as they won both their final two games in December.
A concern for Frank Lampard will be his sides’ form at the Bridge, losing back-to-back fixtures there now against underperforming sides Bournemouth and Southampton as they failed to even score a single goal.
Of course, they’ll rotate their side to the one that played against Brighton on New Year’s Day, but if anything, that’ll play into their hands with their visitors also having a ruthless schedule.
Forest have only played one game fewer than the Blues this December, although they don’t quite have the same squad depth to be able to rest players and keep them fresh.
Chelsea -1 Handicap
Sabri Lamouchi’s men have faced just one Premier League opponent this term and that was travelling to Arsenal in the League Cup back in September, which they ended up losing 5-0 against a much rotated Unai Emery outfit. We doubt it’ll be a repeat of that kind of scoreline, but we’d still make Chelsea the strong favourites.
The Blues have won each of their five outings against lower league opposition by an aggregate scoreline of 19-3 since February 2018, with the only game that they didn’t win by more than a single strike coming against Derby when Lampard was in the opposite dugout.
Moreover, the only one of these the ex-England international was managing for the London side saw them overcome League Two outfit Grimsby Town 7-1 and although the visitors are a much better side than that, we can see Chelsea covering the one-goal handicap yet again in this fixture.
