Following strikes from both Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic at Watford on Saturday, Chelsea further cemented fourth spot in the Premier League and made in eight wins from their last nine outings across all competitions.
That includes a victory in the reverse fixture with Ajax, who’d gone into that game unbeaten from 17 outings this season, though that result has hardly fazed the Dutch outfit as they’ve secured domestic victories over both Feyenoord (4-0) and PEC Zwolle (4-2) since.
The talent the visitors possess has been well documented and although the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong left this summer, they can still beat any side on their day.
Indeed, they were unfortunate not to make the Champions League final last year after Spurs downed them in the second leg 3-2, meaning they crashed out on the away goal rule as their 1-0 in the opening leg in North London wasn’t enough.
However, it has been their form at Johan Cruijff Arena that has been letting them down in Europe, as excluding play-offs versus weaker outfits PAOK and APOEL Nicosia, they’ve gone a disappointing W1-D1-L3 from five outings there since the end of the group stages last season.
It should be noted that four of those games came against Real Madrid, Juventus, Spurs and Chelsea themselves, but interestingly, they’ve won all four of their European trips in this time.
They beat Los Blancos (4-1), the Old Lady (2-1), the aforementioned Lilywhites (1-0) and Valencia this term (3-0), so we’re a little surprised to see them at nearly 3/1 to get the job done.
Ajax +1 Handicap
Frank Lampard’s men obviously deserve to be favourites given their current run and the fact they turned over their visitors not two weeks ago. However, if we take a closer look at their performances at Stamford Bridge, we can see that they’ve gone just W3-D2-L3 from their eight outings here this term.
With each of those victories coming over Grimsby Town, Brighton and Newcastle, it’s hardly convincing. Indeed, those are the three weakest teams to have travelled to the Bridge this season, while Valencia, Liverpool and Man Utd have all got the better of them, as both Leicester and Sheffield Utd ground out stalemates.
Ajax To Win 2-1
Taking that into account, we’re expecting it to be close, especially since all three of those defeats came by single-goal margins. Erik ten Hag’s men do look a big price on the handicap though, having netted at least twice in eight of 10 road trips this season, even if they’ve only kept their hosts out on just three occasions. Seeing as both the Blues’ last two defeats here have finished exactly 2-1, that looks worth having a little flutter on.
