Recent Form
Both sides can be reasonably pleased with their starts to the new campaign, but it’s clear that Celtic hold the upper hand ahead of the first Old Firm derby. They’ve run riot so far, with a 4-1 League Cup win over Ross County the latest hiding they’ve handed out, fresh off the back of a 9-0 pummelling of Dundee Utd last weekend. It’s now six wins from six this term, as they’ve scored an average of 4.2 goals per game and shipped just two in total down the other end.
Rangers have already played 10 times this season having come through qualifiers in Europe with Union Saint-Gilloise and PSV. They too have had little problem finding the net, scoring at least twice in all but two of these games, as both exceptions came on the road in Europe. Summer signing Antonio Colak has hit the ground running with seven goals in nine appearances, though all but one of his goals so far have come at Ibrox.
Celtic To Win And Both Teams To Score
Rangers are just W6-D5-L1 away in the league in 2022, mustering just two clean sheets at St. Mirren and St. Johnstone, who were the two lowest scorers last term. Both teams scored in nine of these games, with the other exception a 3-0 defeat to Celtic, though that remains the only occasion across the past 11 Old Firm derbies where the Gers have failed to score.
Celtic certainly deserve to be favourites for this clash after their dazzling start to the season, while after a tough start last term as Ange Postecoglou was still getting players through the door, they’ve been absolutely imperious since the start of October.
They’ve won 31 of 36 unbeaten league games, leading at both half time and full time on 27 occasions, while at Parkhead alone they’re unbeaten in 27 as they won all but four of these.
Kyogo Furuhashi To Score Anytime
Postecoglou has some nice dilemmas to ponder for his team selection. Moritz Jenz, Carl Starfelt and Stephen Welsh are all competing for a spot at the back, there’s a plethora of midfield options to choose from, while Liel Abada might consider himself unfortunate to be benched for Daizen Maeda following a hat-trick last weekend.
However, despite scoring in substitute appearances against Kilmarnock and Hearts, as well as on his first start of the season against Ross County midweek, Georgios Giakoumakis will surely find himself behind main man Kyogo Furuhashi, who was rested midweek as he didn’t make it off the bench. The Japanese ace has bagged six goals from his last four appearances, and will be seeking his first Old Firm derby strike here at the fourth attempt.
Celtic To Win 2-1
Although both sides possess potent attacks, it’s unlikely this game will go overboard on goals. Only one of 17 Old Firm derbies since 2018/19 have featured more than three, though with Celtic capable of the odd defensive lapse, the 2-1 correct score holds some appeal.
