Celtic have now gone four games without tasting victory and Neil Lennon is merely warming the dugout for whoever comes next, with former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe heavily linked with the post.
After briefly recapturing some form in December, the Hoops have since suffered defeat in the Old Firm Derby, before following that result up with stalemates against Hibernian and then back-to-back versus Livingston.
All of those opponents are in the top five of the table however, and the fallen champions should finally collect their first win of 2021 here.
Hamilton are bottom of the pile and although they’ve only lost once in four appearances, none of their opponents (St. Johnstone, Motherwell, Kilmarnock and Dundee Utd) reside in that top-five bracket.
Against such teams, Hamilton are a poor W1-D1-L8 this term, with their sole victory coming over fifth-placed Livingston back in September, as all but one of those defeats came by a minimum two-goal margin.
The Hoops thumped Hamilton 5-1 on the opening day here at Celtic Park and ran out 3-0 winners on Boxing Day at the Fountain of Youth Stadium.
The hosts have won all 14 head-to-heads since 2016/17, including by minimum three-goal margins in five of the last seven, so it’s unsurprising that Celtic are short-priced favourites despite their ongoing slump.
In fact, Hamilton have now failed to score in five of their last six outings, while they’ve managed just one strike in four encounters with the Old Firm duo this season.
Celtic -2 Handicap
Brian Rice’s team have lost eight of their past 10 on their travels in all competitions, including an 8-0 whipping at the hands of Rangers, as they conceded at least twice in each defeat.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that Celtic played the better football in defeat to Rangers recently, while Lennon’s selection options have been limited in their recent stalemates.
A controversial trip to Dubai for some warm-weather saw as many as 13 first-team players become unavailable due to an outbreak of coronavirus, though most are now back as only Christopher Jullien and James Forest remain sidelined through injury, while club captain Scott Brown in absent after his sending off last time out.
A win for Celtic here won’t put them back in contention for the title, but it can at least stop the rot. Given the visitor’s form, especially on the road, combined with the consistent head-to-head results, it’s hard to look past the Hoops for the points.
All but one of Celtic’s seven home wins in the league this term have come by more than a single goal, while over half came via a minimum three-goal margin, so they should at least get a temporary reprieve from the negativity surrounding the club.
