A must win game last time out for Burnley saw them grind past lowly Sheffield Utd thanks to a 32nd-minute header from Ben Mee. That result pulls them further clear of the Premier League relegation zone, but Sean Dyche will know there is still a lot of work to be done.
MK Dons currently find themselves in the bottom half of League One after 21 matches, but back-to-back victories over fellow bottom half sides Bristol Rovers and Swindon put them in a much better place.
Indeed, those two victories account for a third of their league wins this term, but their away form is still very worrying. They’ve gone just W3-D8-L14 from their last 25 league trips dating back to late September, as 16 saw fewer than three strikes.
That’s hardly the sort of form that’s going to challenge a team in England’s top flight, and Russell Martin’s men will need to be at the top of their game even to grind out a draw.
The Clarets have been going under the radar in their recent form, but they have gone an impressive W3-D2-L1 from their six matches since the start of December, facing all of Everton (1-1), Arsenal (1-0), Aston Villa (0-0), Wolves (2-1), Leeds (0-1) and Sheffield Utd (1-0).
Moreover, they’ve also won three of four unbeaten outings at Turf Moor, conceding just twice across them and you’d expect the hosts to have too much for the Dons.
Burnley To Beat MK Dons
You have to go back to the 2014/15 campaign for the last time a League One side managed to overturn a Premier League outfit on the road in this tournament.
Indeed, top flight sides at home have won 14 of 19 unbeaten home FA Cup matches since the start of the 2015/16 campaign.
That includes when Burnley beat both Peterborough and Barnsley in the last two editions of this competition at this same third round stage, and we’d expect them to do the same again here.
By contrast, MK Dons failed to advance past the first round in their previous two attempts in this tournament, and although they have reached this stage this time around, victories over Eastleigh and Barnet are hardly impressive.
Both those teams currently reside in National League, as they won the former on penalties and the latter just 1-0 in the 82nd minute.
With that in mind, we certainly don’t think they have the quality on the road to make a proper challenge this weekend, and even if Dyche rotates his side considerably, they should win this comfortably.
