Positive Start To The Season For Both Clubs
Burnley have made a much more positive start to this campaign than they did the last. Four points and sixth in the table having played Southampton, Arsenal and Wolves is not bad going for Sean Dyche and he’ll be relishing the opportunity of hosting notably weaker opposition to gain some momentum.
Sunderland may be unbeaten this season so far and are level on points at the top of League One alongside four other teams, but Jack Ross will be feeling the weight of expectation from the fans to gain promotion this year and will most likely field a weakened side for this cup fixture.
Dyche Expected To Rest Players
Dyche’s side only played two days prior to this fixture, so it would be a shock to see a similar line-up from Burnley either and we will most likely be witnessing something approaching two second-string teams.
Ashley Barnes has been on fire this season, scoring in each of their three Premier League games so far and has been the key man for the Clarets, though with Liverpool at the weekend, Dyche will most likely look elsewhere for this fixture, which should have a serious impact on Burnley’s firepower.

Burnley don’t look to have enough at the other end of the field either, with just the three clean sheets in their last 18 league outings, so the Black Cats will fancy their chances.
Excluding play-off matches, the Wearside club have lost just three of their last 30 league matches, albeit against much weaker opposition, and will not rollover easily.
At the prices, Ross’ team look good value up against a Burnley outfit with little rest time and one eye on their weekend clash.
Sunderland To Win
That’s especially the case as Burnley hold a terrible record in this competition in recent times, despite consistently facing off against teams lower down the football pyramid. Since October 2013, they’re just W1-D2-L4 as both stalemates ended in defeats during extra-time or penalties.
Burnley were beaten 2-1 by another League One outfit in Burton Albion during this competition last season, so we don’t feel at all confident about their chances.
Both teams have scored in 75% of Sunderland’s league matches since the beginning of last season, as well as all six outings across all competitions this term. In a knockout scenario, neither team will be holding themselves back, while Sunderland will certainly look to extend their winning streak to five games.
