Steve Bruce has been proving the doubters wrong with his Newcastle side suffering just the single defeat in seven outings, winning four of these games including their last two away at Sheffield Utd and at home to Southampton.
Whereas the Magpies have been busy climbing the table, Burnley have been heading swiftly in the other direction as they’ve lost six of their last eight fixtures.
In fairness to Sean Dyche’s men, they haven’t experienced the kindest schedule with each of those defeats coming against teams currently residing in the top half of the table.
Up against bottom-half sides this term, they’ve won five of seven unbeaten games with both stalemates coming on the road, as they kept clean sheets in each victory.
However, having conceded 20 times across their last eight fixtures, we wouldn’t be comfortable backing them to win at the prices, let alone to win to nil.
Newcastle have been infuriatingly inconsistent this term, losing to Norwich before immediately beating Spurs earlier on in the campaign, as well as losing to Villa just prior to holding Man City to a draw at the end of last month.
However, while they’re unbeaten at home since a narrow opening day loss to the Gunners, away from St. James’ Park they’ve lost five of their eight encounters, conceding an average of two per game, and so we’re happy to avoid the outright in this fixture.
Indeed, with a growing injury list, Newcastle are hard to get behind despite their current form. Centre-backs Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark are out injured, as well as wingers Matt Ritchie and Allan Saint-Maximin.
Burnley aren’t without their own problems though and Sean Dyche will be sweating on the fitness of Ashley Westwood, Johan Berg Gudmundsson and the influential Ashley Barnes.
Jonjo Shelvey To Score Anytime
Given the Magpies have netted 11 times in their last six matches, including twice in each of their last three, there’s some value to be had around the in-form Jonjo Shelvey.
He struggled to get a look in earlier on in the campaign, but he’s started each of Newcastle’s six matches since the start of November and scored in four of them.
That leaves him out on his own as their top scorer with five for the season overall, as none of his teammates have netted more than twice.
In fact, no other midfielder or striker has scored more than once for the club this term, while Shelvey has averaged more shots per game than any of his teammates. Given Burnley’s recent defensive woes, he looks well worth backing to score for the fourth consecutive match.
