Midweek EFL Cup Loss For Burnley
We wouldn’t read too much into Burnley’s midweek cup defeat to League One outfit Sunderland. Sean Dyche made 10 changes to his line-up and they were up against a team that remains unbeaten this season, even if the Black Cats also made eight switches to their side as well.
Three shots on target was a poor return and their finishing was far from clinical, though Burnley did still make it onto the scoreboard via summer signing Jay Rodriguez, who has played second fiddle to the clear first choice strike partnership of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.
The Clarets shouldn’t be suffering from heavy legs then as first team regulars return to the fold, though they’ll be up against it here with Liverpool not playing midweek and starting the season well.
Jurgen Klopp’s outfit have lifted the UEFA Super Cup on penalties and beaten Norwich, Southampton and Arsenal domestically, but their defensive efforts haven’t been able to match last seasons’ exploits.
That’s perhaps unsurprising given the absence of goalkeeper Alisson and they’re yet to keep a clean sheet.

Burnley have hardly excelled when facing ‘Big Six’ opposition, going a pitiful W1-D4-L19 in their last 24 such matches across all competitions since October 2017, while conceding at least twice in 18 of these and three or more in 11.
However, they have at least found the net on occasion and particularly in the more recent clashes with the big guns, doing so in six of the last seven.
Both teams have actually scored in each of the past five head-to-heads between these two sides, with Liverpool remaining unbeaten as they won four of these.

Given Burnley have found the net in all four of their outings in the current campaign following their midweek cup defeat, we’d be surprised if the away win and both teams to score didn’t land.
Whereas Liverpool have a multitude of dangermen and goals throughout the team, Burnley are more reliant upon Ashley Barnes for output.
The 29-year-old has bagged four of their five league goals to date, with partner Chris Wood less of a source of goals but helpful in Burnley’s build-up play, while he’s also found the net in six of his last eight appearances against ‘Big Six’s sides.
