Czech Republic have drawn level on points with England in Group A following their shock win in Prague, though they have played a game more, while the Three Lions should comfortably see this group out with a vastly superior goal difference and only Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo left to play.
Gareth Southgate will hope it serves as a warning against complacency to his side however, with the result ending a run of 43 unbeaten qualifiers going back 10 years (even that defeat to the Ukraine in 2009 was a dead rubber game for England, having already secured top spot in their group en route to the World Cup).
Changes At The Back Expected For England
Although the attacking trio of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho failed to ignite on Friday, they demonstrated against Kosovo in the previous outing what a potent force they can form going forwards.
Southgate will be more preoccupied with how his team is faring at the other end at present, and so expect changes at the back with Danny Rose and Michael Keane hardly covering themselves in glory once again.
Ben Chilwell is clearly established as first choice left-back now, Tyrone Mings should make his international debut ahead of the ring-rusty Joe Gomez, while Trent Alexander-Arnold may well come in at right-back to replace Kieran Trippier.
Southgate experimented with a 4-2-3-1 against the Czechs, presumably hoping to allow Mason Mount to flourish in an attacking central midfield role, though the Chelsea youngster barely touched the ball in the first half and the switch back to the more tried and tested 4-3-3 here seems inevitable.
Moreover, Declan Rice didn’t have the best of games on Friday and missed training on Monday through illness, so Harry Winks could find himself drafted into the midfield and perhaps offers greater control of the ball in the centre of the park.

Although England’s last two fixtures have seen them display defensive weaknesses, Bulgaria went down 4-0 when they met as recently as September and they’ve shown little to suggest they have much to offer going forwards. The only time they’ve scored more than once in their last 10 games came in a 3-2 defeat hosting Kosovo, despite facing some pretty ropey opposition over this period, while captain Ivelin Popov is the only player in the squad with more than three international goals to his name.
This century, England have faced Bulgaria three times, winning 4-0 twice at Wembley and 3-0 in the other in Sofia, and we’d expect a similar outcome to prevail here.
Given England have only been outgunned by Belgium in the current qualifying campaign, but have looked uncomfortable at the back, the away win and over 2.5 goals appears a solid proposition. In fact, Bulgaria have lost and seen at least three goals in four of their past five outings now.
