After losing the Championship play-off final last term in extra time, Brentford have an early opportunity to get some revenge on Fulham here. They actually won both regular season meetings, leaving them with three wins and two stalemates in the head to heads over 90 minutes since 2017/18.
That includes victories in both encounters on home turf, though we’d expect a tight tussle with the three clashes last season yielding just three goals in total during normal time.
Brentford came within a whisker of automatic promotion last term and they’ve already inflicted a revenge of sorts as the team that pipped them to the post, West Brom, were beaten on penalties in the last round at the Hawthorns.
They’ve also knocked out Premier League opposition in Southampton at St. Mary’s, but home form should help them here even more.
Brentford Draw No Bet
The Bees may need to pick up in the league having lost their opener at Birmingham and drawn with Millwall in their last road trip, but they did triumph 3-0 over Huddersfield back on their own patch. Brentford are W15-D4-L3 here in all competitions since late November, keeping clean sheets in nine of those victories, while all three losses came by just the single strike.
In fact, counting their play-off final loss, 16 of Brentford’s 17 defeats at any venue since the start of last season have come by that same margin, including each of the last 13, showing how difficult they are to put down. Meanwhile, 11 of those losses came away from home, so Thomas Frank’s side look a good prospect draw no bet.
Scott Parker will be demanding a reaction from his players after a horrid 3-0 loss hosting relegation rivals Villa on Monday, though with a performance that bad and with Wolves to come three days after this fixture, he’ll surely be making some changes here.
His team could be very similar to the one that faced Sheffield Wednesday in the previous round, though there’s an evident lack of quality in the squad, and victories over the bottom Championship side and League One outfit Ipswich don’t convince.
The Cottagers’ defence is easy to get at and they’ve already shipped 10 league goals this term, conceding within eight minutes in each of them as Villa were already two goals up after just 15 minutes on Monday.
There’s little creativity out wide and so there’s been little supply for star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to feed upon, though in any case he’s likely to be rested here for Aboubakar Kamara.
Fulham have won just six of 18 games on the road since December and only once by more than a single goal, so Brentford should be looking to claim a third Premier League club in this tournament against a side low on confidence.
