Saul Alvarez vs Rocky Fielding - Boxing Betting Preview

There’s a tasty night of boxing on offer in the Big Apple this Saturday night as Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez steps up to super-middleweight for the first time to test Britain’s Rocky Fielding in a first defence of his WBA strap.

Canelo steps up to 168lb division

Widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet, Canelo understandably heads into the fight the overwhelming odds-on favourite at 1/16 to win the bout. While there’s no doubting the Mexican’s pedigree, a single loss against the legend that is Floyd Mayweather the only blemish on an otherwise flawless record, that price perhaps underestimates 9/1 shot Rocky Fielding, who has more than proved himself more than capable at world level.

And Canelo’s position as the odds-on favourite almost certainly doesn’t reflect the fact that this is his first fight at 168lbs, which could prove problematic in the opening stages as he becomes accustomed to the weight.

Punters will find value with Rocky

Liverpool-born Rocky Fielding has fought tirelessly to get to the top of the super-middleweight pile. The 31-year-old secured a stunning knockout victory against Tyron Zeuge in Germany to secure the WBA title. But, rightly or wrongly, Fielding finds himself heading into this match as the underdog and that’s very much reflected in the betting.

But given that this will be Canelo’s initiation to the division, punters could find that there’s value to be had in backing Fielding to win, especially if he can cause an upset in one of the early rounds. Get behind the Brit to win in Rounds 1 – 3 at odds of 33/1.

Canelo bets

Canelo’s position as favourite is reflected in the majority of the outright win markets. The Mexican’s recent history of defeating his opponents by decision or unanimous decision puts his price to win the match by KO/ TKO/ DQ/ TD at 2/9.

For those punters who just can’t see past a Canelo win but want a higher a return on their outlay might be tempted by Grouped Round Betting. Canelo is available at 10/3 to win the match in rounds 1 - 3, or 11/5 in rounds 4 – 6.

To go the distance?

Despite boasting impressive fight records, neither Canelo nor Fielding are considered to be ‘knockout’ specialists. Canelo’s last TKO came against Liam Smith more than two years and three bouts ago. And while Fielding may have ripped the title from Tyron Zeuge with a devastating TKO, his previous victory was on points against Korel Horejesk in March of this year. Based on the respective records the fight to go to the distance is worth a shot at 10/3.
