Bayern Register First Win, Mainz Bottom Of The Table
After failing to capitalise on early lead over Hertha at the Allianz on the opening weekend, eventually coming from behind to salvage a draw, Bayern have finally got their first win of the season. That puts them on four points after two games having dismantled Schalke 3-0 at the Veltins-Arena last Saturday, with a Lewandowski hat-trick to go with it.
Their opponents haven’t been quite so successful and are currently sitting rock-bottom of the Bundesliga on goal difference, as they’ve lost to both Freiburg (3-0) and Gladbach (3-1), whilst they were also beaten by German 3. Liga side Kaiserslautern (2-0) in the DFB-Pokal with a full team out.
Mainz Form A Worry
That form is very worrying for Sandro Schwarz’s charges, who are already in a slight predicament at present, but playing against the biggest team in Germany next is hardly going to resolve that. Indeed, they’ve lost 12 of their 14 meetings with the Bavarians since the start of the 2012/13 season, with their sole victory coming back in March 2016.
Moreover, the last two seasons have seen the biggest disparity between the two sides, as Mainz have lost each of those four fixtures by a combined aggregate scoreline of 14-1, with the last two here finishing 4-0 and 6-0.
Coutinho Expected To Start
New signings Phillippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic made appearances from the bench against Schalke last weekend, but Nico Kovac will be delighted that both got off the mark for Bayern in a 13-1 exhibition match win over Vilshofen Rot Weiss 24 hours later.
Coutinho will likely come into the side and replace Thomas Muller for this encounter, while Thiago should also be available to make a return to action having missed last weekend.
Bayern To Win To Nil
The treatment room is rather more daunting for the visitors as new defender Jerry St. Juste dislocated his shoulder and they’ll also be without Jean-Philippe Mateta. Since the latter’s arrival at the start of last season, they’ve lost 57% of the seven matches he hasn’t started, compared to just 45% of the 29 he has.
It isn’t hard to see why their record suffers in his absence seeing as he scored double the amount of goals than any other teammate could manage last term. Given their measly output of just one goal from three games across all competitions so far, we’ll look to capitalise on that by backing their hosts to win to nil.
Bayern -2 Handicap
When visiting teams that finished in the top half of the table last term, Mainz lost seven of nine matches, including defeats by more than two goals on four occasions as each of those came against teams that ended up in the top six.
Bayern were of course the most emphatic winners and with Mainz leaking goals at the back in the new campaign, we’d be surprised if this goes any other way than a dominant home win.
