Barca have had themselves a lengthier rest, with their outing against Sevilla at the weekend postponed, meaning it’s now been two an a half weeks since they last took to the field in a 2-1 win over Getafe.
There are still a lot of issues at the Catalan club as they look in danger of slipping down the European pecking order, though make no mistake, this remains one of the biggest fixtures in football.
Bayern have recovered from a shaky start to the campaign and now sit just two points off Wolfsberg at the top.
The Bavarians have now scored 24 goals across their last four outings in all competitions, although half did come in their victory over fifth tier Bremer in the DFB-Pokal.
Their 4-1 victory over Leipzig at the weekend highlighted their domestic dominance, though they’ll want to rectify their failure to defend this trophy last year by getting off to a winning start.
This has been one of the more entertaining fixtures in recent times, with the most recent meeting finishing 8-2 and there being an average of 3.73 goals per game in their 11 previous head-to-heads.
Bayern have seen more success in recent seasons, winning four of the last five meetings, with three of those victories coming by at least three clear goals.
Bayern Munich To Win
While the Nou Camp has never been an easy place to go for any side, this Barca team doesn’t invoke the same fear that teams of old have, though even with that said, Bayern have won four of their six visits to this stadium and will certainly feel confident heading into this.
Neither are strangers to this competition, though in opening round matches, none have a better record than the German side.
Indeed, the last team to take any points off Bayern in the opening group game was Deportivo La Coruna back in 2002, while even more impressively, of the 44 goals that have been scored in such games since that defeat, Bayern have scored 42 of them, and are currently on a run of 24 without reply since 2012 with eight consecutive wins-to-nil despite facing the likes of Atletico Madrid and Man City in that time.
We wouldn’t be entirely confident of backing that outcome again though considering Bayern have now conceded in six of their last seven outings when excluding that 12-0 win over Bremer, while Barca have scored in 23 of their last 24 across all competitions, with each of their three this year seeing both teams find the net.
