Fiji Recent Form
The Fijians have twice reached the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup. Their most recent run to the last eight came 12 years ago when they also found themselves in a pool with Australia and Wales, beating the Northern Hemisphere side to second spot, though they look to have their work cut out this time round.
They’ve won seven of their 10 matches since the start of last year though, including that famous victory over France in Paris as the likes of Semi Radradra, Josua Tuisova and Leone Nakarawa are capable of taking the game to any side. With the other Pool D members consisting of Wales, Georgia and Uruguay this is a must win game for both sides if they’re to have any chance of progressing to the knockouts alongside Warren Gatland’s men.
Australia Recent Form
Michael Cheika’s Wallabies have been an unpredictable force in recent years as they slipped to seventh place in the rankings last September - their lowest position in the World Rankings since the system began 16 years ago – while they still only sit one place higher now.
However, having put all the Israel Folau drama behind them they did recently beat New Zealand last month, and even if they were humbled by them a week later at Eden Park 36-0, they’ve proven they can take on anyone.
At World Cup’s
The Aussies have lost only one pool stage match at the World Cup since it became the five-team pool format for the 2003 World Cup, and that came against Ireland in 2011.
Of the tier two nations to play them in that time they’ve won all their nine encounters by more than 14 points, including a record breaking 142-0 against Namibia.
It was Fiji who were the only one of those teams to at least make a game of it when losing 28-13 four years ago, though they did also succumb to a 55-12 hammering in 2007.
In fact, the Islanders have lost seven of their nine World Cup matches since the knockout stages of the 2007 tournament, with the two exceptions against Uruguay and Namibia, as each defeat came by at least 10 points and six by 15 or more.
Australia -12 Point Handicap
The head-to-heads certainly don’t favour the Fijians either with them winless in their last 14 matches since 1972 as each of the last five since 2007 have seen an average of 35 points separate the sides.
With that in mind the Wallabies should make their mark on this group in the opener against a talented yet still considerably weaker tier two side.
Australia -12 Point Handicap At 6/10
