Recent Form
Atleti have somewhat made up for their losing streak in December by winning four out of their last seven but a 1-0 loss in their penultimate fixture against bottom of the table Levante would of certainly dampened their spirits of a title race with their city rival, Real Madrid.
With this game being held on Wednesday it is going to be Atleti’s third game in a week which may be of some concern considering that Atletico have played a very strong team in the two games prior to this one.
Manchester United threw away their lead in the space of 60 seconds against Leeds on Sunday, Rodrigo Moreno’s goal was very reminiscent of Arthur Masuaku’s goal against Chelsea earlier in the year and Raphinha pounced on a low cross at the far post to make it 2-2.
Thankfully for United fans, Leeds’ comeback was to no avail after Fred and Anthony Elanga made it 4-2. Despite beating their rivals comfortably in the end they didn’t make it easy for themselves and Manchester United have started to develop a pattern of letting teams back into games that they shouldn’t be in, they will be hoping this won’t be the case against Atletico de Madrid.
Atletico To Win
Although the Red Devil’s aren’t favourites to win this game, when you have a player of Cristiano Ronaldo’s quality, out of the 14 times that a player has scored 12 or more goals over the course of a Champions League season, five of those 14 times has been Ronaldo and he also has the record for the most goal in a CL season (17).
United will be happy that he broke his goal-drought against Brighton the other week and will be hoping that he can carry them through to the latter stages of the tournament with his goal-scoring acumen. He has scored 25 times in 35 games against Atletico and has scored a hattrick on two occasions, both in the knockouts.
These two teams have only played each other twice in their history which was in the 1990’s when Atletico won over the space of two legs, to better gauge how this match will go down we’ll have to look at how Man United perform in Spain.
Since 2016/17, the Red Devils have a record of W3-D1-L2 which is pretty average when you consider their wins were against Celta de Vigo, Grenada and Villarreal.
They drew to Sevilla and lost to Barcelona and Valencia, United also managed to lose against Villarreal in the Europa League final last year and Sevilla the year before but both of these games were played on neutral ground.
