Atletico Unbeaten, Eibar Searching For First Win
Eibar make the trip south to Madrid on Sunday for their third away game of the season, having yet to feature at home. The visitors are winless thus far, having lost on the opening day to newly promoted Mallorca and then luckily clinched a point to an Osasuna side that enjoyed the better chances last week.
Atletico, by contrast, are two from two and are yet to concede after a pair of solid 1-0 wins to open their campaign.
Head-To-Head Results
Eibar are into their sixth consecutive top-flight season and over this period, Atletico are unbeaten in 12 head-to-head encounters across all competitions, winning nine of them, and are strong favourites for all three points in this one.
Eibar have however picked up a point in each of their two visits to the Wanda Metropolitano, which Atletico have called home since the start of 2017/18, as only Espanyol (3) and Real Madrid (4) have collected more points at this venue.
That sequence of stalemates should come to an end here though, with Eibar only winning two of 30 away games against top-six finishers since the start of 2014/15 (W2-D8-L20). Given both team’s respective performances so far in the early stages of the new campaign we can’t look past the home win, but at such short odds, we’ll avoid the outright market.
Atletico To Win To Nil
Los Rojiblancos have kept a clean sheet in 14 of 16 home victories since the start of last season now, as only top-half outfits Valencia and Athletic Bilbao could register on the scoresheet in defeat. Eibar have finished between 12th and 14th in each of the past four seasons now, but excluding Atletico’s results against top-six finishers, the hosts have won to nil in 12 of their last 13 at the Wanda.
Mendilibar’s men have failed to score in half of their 12 away fixtures against top-six sides over the past two campaigns and, with Atletico’s impeccable defensive record, the hosts will be determined to shut out Eibar and get their first three points against them at the Wanda, so the win to nil looks an attractive proposition.
Morata To Score Anytime
Alvaro Morata has started the season well in the absence of Diego Costa and though the latter has returned to training, the number nine should retain his place in the starting line-up.
He scored his sides’ opening goal of the season and came close on multiple occasions last time out, while he’s formed an understanding with summer signing Joao Felix.
The acquisition of the Portuguese wonderkid, as well as attacking full-back Kieran Trippier, has provided Morata with more opportunities than before and with enough chances, he’s bound to tuck one away.
