West Ham tasted defeat for the first time in 2021 having gone down 3-1 at home to champions Liverpool.
They never really got going in the game and failed to utilise their height advantage throughout the match, only scoring a late consolation through Craig Dawson.
They have another tricky test here against a side that have shocked a fair few people this season as Aston Villa look to strengthen their claim on a European spot at the end of the campaign.
Ross Barkley’s goal was enough for Villa to see off Southampton at the weekend and leave them in a strong position of ninth with two games in hand on most of the clubs above them.
It’s hard to depict their credentials in this match though, with their only home game against a current top-half side so far this season being their stunning 7-2 victory over Liverpool, though they’ve also suffered defeats to Southampton, Leeds, and Brighton here at Villa Park.
What’s clear is both these sides have an abundance of quality, with the respective additions of former Brentford due Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma helping to make their attack’s click, while the defences have a combined 17 clean sheets between them, so you can almost guarantee that this is going to be a game of fine margins.
Aston Villa To Win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1
We’d expect Aston Villa’s fluid attack to get the better of their visitors’ defence though considering five of the Hammers’ seven clean sheets this season have come against bottom half clubs while they’ve conceded 1.8 goals per game against those clubs, the most from any other side in the top-10.
The recent head-to-heads tilt the scales in the Hammers’ favour as they’re now unbeaten in five against the Villans (W2-D3), winning the reverse fixture this season 2-1, though their only wins in that run came either at the London Stadium or Upton Park and they’re actually winless at Villa Park since the 2013/14 season, winning just one of the last 10 meetings here.
There’s very little to separate the two, though on home soil we’d expect the hosts to edge this one. The quality of Jack Grealish, Ross Barkley and Ollie Watkins has the potential to cause any defence in the league issues when on song, and with David Moyes’ men coming off an uninspiring 3-1 defeat to Liverpool where they generally looked fatigued, Aston Villa’s attack could cause some damage if West Ham adopt a similar game plan, though it should be a close contest and the multi-bet offers good value.
