Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Sheffield Utd last weekend ended a sequence of four games without a victory in all competitions, and they’ve since followed it up with a morale-boosting 4-0 triumph over Slavia Prague in Europe.
The league has been a disaster for them this season and the Europa League has to be their main priority now, though they’ll be keen to build some momentum up and Fulham should provide obliging opponents.
The visitor’s survival prospects were dealt a major blow last weekend as 17th-placed Newcastle won at Burnley, leaving the Magpies six points clear of the drop zone with a game in hand.
The Cottagers’ next fixture beyond this one is also away at Chelsea, while they still have to travel to Man Utd over their final six games, so their situation is looking pretty desperate right now.
After a spell where they lost just once in eight outings, handing them hope in their bid to avoid relegation, Scott Parker’s men have now lost five of their past six.
That includes defeats in each of their last four by an aggregate 9-2 scoreline, while they’ve mustered just three goals in seven appearances now.
Fulham may only have lost once on their travels in nine league games (W2-D6-L1), though most of these games came against fellow bottom-half sides and that should prove telling here.
Arsenal To Beat Fulham
Fulham have lost five of their past six against the traditional ‘Big Six’ and Leicester, while they went down 3-0 hosting Arsenal on the opening day of the season.
Moreover, the Gunners are W6-D2-L2 against the teams beneath them since Christmas, including five wins from six unbeaten clashes with the bottom seven over this period.
Mikel Arteta also benefits from returning players with Emile Smith Rowe superb midweek, while Martin Odegaard could potentially be back this weekend. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains sidelined with malaria, but there are plenty of attacking options including the likes of Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pepe, Willian and Gabriel Martinelli.
That firepower should ensure there are no slip-ups here. However, we’d be wary of backing Arsenal too gung-ho as their defence retains an ability to gift chances away, even if David Luiz is still absent. Kieran Tierney is also a loss for Arsenal, so Granit Xhaka looks set to continue deputizing at left-back for the minute, but expect the Gunners to have too much going forwards for their visitors to handle.
