Losses Last Week For Both Teams
After narrow victories over both Newcastle and Burnley there was some budding optimism at the Emirates, though the Gunners were brought swiftly down to earth when outclassed 3-1 at Anfield last weekend.
Spurs’ defeat hosting Newcastle has left a question mark over their prospects too, especially after they were highly fortunate to escape the Etihad with a point from their clash with champions City a week earlier.
Eriksen’s Future Still In Doubt
Mauricio Pochettino will be more concerned over his sides’ sluggishness than his counterpart in the opposite dugout, with even Spurs’ opening day victory over Aston Villa only secured via a Harry Kane brace in the final five minutes.
There must also be concerns over key midfielder Christian Eriksen and his frame of mind, with transfer speculation continuing to mount as the European window doesn’t shut until after this game.
The Danish international played just 26 minutes against Villa and 28 versus Newcastle, while he was largely a passenger in the game with City, but Spurs can ill afford to have him thinking of elsewhere at present.
Arsenal And Spurs To Draw
That’s especially the case as the visitors have often struggled under Pochettino on the road to ‘Big Six’ rivals, though that has been less true in North London derbies than when facing the other members of that elite group. There’s not been much to separate these two sides in recent years and last term they faced off three times in all competitions, winning one game apiece and drawing the other.
In fact, they’re both W3-D4-L3 in head-to-heads since 2015/16, while there have been three stalemates from their six clashes at the Emirates since Pochettino arrived at the helm for Spurs in the summer of 2014.
North London Derby To Finish 1-1
There was a time when this fixture guaranteed goals, but recent years have seen a more pragmatic approach and only one of seven head-to-head meetings since 2016/17 have seen three goals or more.
However, going back to 2014/15, eight of 12 have seen both teams score, including all five draws over this period as four of them finished 1-1. With liability David Luiz patrolling the Gunners’ rearguard these days there’s certainly potential for a goal at each end, leaving the correct score an attractive proposition.
Harry Kane To Score Anytime
It’s no surprise to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane lead the goalscoring markets. However, we have a clear preference for the latter in this fixture. Aubameyang has been something of a flat-track bully at Arsenal with just three of his 34 Premier League goals coming against ‘Big Six’ opposition, whereas Kane simply loves facing the Gunners.
He has nine goals in as many league games against them throughout his career, only failing to score in one of those outings, but whereas he found no space up against Newcastle’s compact defence, he won’t have to drop deep so often to receive the ball here.
