All is not well at the Emirates and while the international break has afforded the Gunners a chance to regroup, Unai Emery won’t exactly be able to use the opportunity to put his first-choice side through their paces.
As many as 13 members of his squad have been away with their national teams, though by the same token the Saints have seen eight of their contingents depart temporarily.
Emery at least benefits from the break in the sense that the likes of Dani Ceballos and Kieran Tierney have had time to properly regain their fitness.
He can also take comfort from the Saints’ recent form that has seen them lose six of seven winless matches across all competitions since late September, though in fairness Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men faced a tricky fixture list having played Spurs, Chelsea and Leicester, as well as Man City twice.
Although Southampton weren’t utterly embarrassed in recent clashes with Man City as they were just prior to that when Leicester thumped them 9-0, their record against the top sides leaves a lot to be desired.
Up against the ‘Big Six’ plus this season’s Foxes side they’ve gone W2-D6-L24 since 2017/18 across all competitions, including 14 defeats from 16 winless matches on their travels with 11 of those Loss/Loss doubles.
Half-Time Arsenal/Full-Time Arsenal
The Gunners have thrown away winning positions in recent weeks, doing so in four of their last five outings in all tournaments, including first half leads against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Wolves.
However, we’re not quite so sure the Saints have what it takes to come from behind, having lost seven of eight matches against Premier League opposition (including their trip to the Etihad in the League Cup) where they’ve trailed at the break this season.
That bodes well for Arsenal as for all their problems, they’ve taken a lead into half-time in each of their past three league fixtures at the Emirates, as well as 11 of 16 since late December.
Emery’s charges have consistently faltered on the road over this period, but one home turf they ought to get the job done. Arsenal have led at both half-time and full-time in each of the past two seasons in this fixture, and though it may only mask over their issues, we expect them to make it three in a row.
