REPUBLIC OF IRELAND V SWITZERLAND ODDS HERE!

Jury Still Out On Mick McCarthy

Ireland were only denied a place at the last World Cup by Denmark and in particular Christian Eriksen in the play-offs. They then finished behind the Danes and Wales as they were relegated from Group B4 in the UEFA Nations League, ending Martin O’Neill’s time in charge, though a heavy 4-1 defeat in Cardiff aside, they hardly embarrassed themselves.

In truth however, poor form and uninspiring performances had made a switch in the dugout inevitable for some time, but the jury is still out on Mick McCarthy’s appointment as they haven’t faced the most arduous of fixtures so far under the new man in his second spell as national team boss.

Republic of Ireland Recent Form

Gibraltar (twice) and Georgia have been downed by slim 1-0 or 2-0 scorelines, while a 1-1 stalemate was achieved against the Danes as they squared off once more. However, a chronic lack of output affects them badly as the five goals they managed across those fixtures are their only successful efforts in eight outings now.

In fact, aside from 30-year-old midfielder James McClean, who has 10 goals from 67 caps, no one in the squad has more than three for the national side. The four forwards selected have managed a paltry combined total of zero strikes from 29 appearances, as Shane Long (17 goals from 82 caps) has been omitted despite being available, having only featured for 16 minutes for Southampton this season.

Switzerland To Win

Switzerland’s record in competitive fixtures over the past few years makes them clear and deserved favourites. Indeed, the visitors have more than held their own in recent times, shocking Belgium 5-2 on the way to a fourth-place finish in the inaugural Nations League, drawing with Brazil at the World Cup, as well as registering another stalemate in a friendly versus Spain just prior to that tournament.

Of course, Ireland aren’t anywhere near the level of those teams, but the Swiss haven’t just pulled out the odd result against the big guns of world football. In fact, excluding, Brazil, Belgium, England and Portugal, Switzerland are an outstanding W13-D3-L1 in competitive fixtures dating back to September 2016.

Switzerland To Win 2-0

Given the visitors have kept a clean sheet in nine of the last 15 of those matches, including eight win to nils, they appear a sure thing to take the spoils here. However, we’re not expecting them to pummel their hosts.

Ireland may have attacking issues, but defensively they remain a tight and compact outfit, with 17 of their last 20 matches featuring fewer than three goals. Given Switzerland scored at least twice in 13 of those 17 aforementioned competitive games overall, the 2-0 correct score certainly appeals at the prices.

Some may be concerned that the visitors could struggle themselves in the absence of Xherdan Shaqiri. However, Switzerland have won to nil in five of six unbeaten games where the Liverpool man has played a half or less since August 2016 against anyone, in competitive matches or friendlies. This includes a 6-0 humbling of Panama, as well as 2-0 victories over Portugal, the Faroe Islands and Georgia.

Switzerland To Win At 6/5

2-0 Switzerland Correct Score At 15/2
