In what some are billing the “Case Keenum revenge game”, Minnesota’s quarterback will be looking to put on a show when his former Rams teammates roll into town this Sunday.
Keenum backed up starter Sam Bradford to open the season, but after the latter suffered a knee injury in the Viking’s week 1 win against the Saints, Keenum became the team’s starting quarterback and has exceed all expectations in the two months since.
He has been somewhat of a surprise package at the helm of the offense, taking good care of the football and developing a strong rapport with his wide receiving corps.
Keenum’s opposite number, Jared Goff, displaced him as starting quarterback last season with the Rams. The second-year pro has been thrust into the MVP conversation of late, having played lights out football the past few weeks.
His Rams side, rejuvenated under coach of the year candidate Sean McVay, have been one of the most consistent units this season. They are on course to set an NFL record by being the first team in history to go from having the worst points per game record to the best from one season to the next. In 2016, the Rams averaged a paltry 14 points per game. This year, however, they are averaging just shy of 33 points a week.
Their attacking prowess will be tested against a stout Minnesota defense, who has one of the stingiest defensive units across the National Football League. Mike Zimmer’s star-studded defense is giving up just 18.3 points per game this year – good enough for tied fifth across the league.
Both teams sit at 7-2, topping their divisions, as they enter a crucial stretch in the hunt to reach the playoffs. Coming off a three-game stretch where the Rams are averaging 39 points scored, it seems a no brainer to back over 47.5 total points scored at US Bank Stadium at 6/5.
In what is set to be a close scoring affair, it could come down to the teams’ kickers. Greg Zuerlein (Rams) and Kai Forbath (Vikings) are ranked first and second respectively in field goal make percentage, currently sitting at 96.6% and 95.7%.
In fact, the last time these two sides met during the regular season, overtime was required to settle it as the Vikings edged the Rams 21-18. Minnesota will hope to extend their winning run against Sunday’s opponents, which stands at 4. We like the Vikings to capitalise on home field advantage in a close one here – back Minnesota to win by a margin of six points or less at 13/5.
