Biggest Clash Of The Group Stages
The tournament schedule certainly hasn’t left a shortage of high-profile games out of the opening Saturday. France and Argentina entertain each other at 08:15 BST following Australia’s opening encounter against Fiji in the first game of the day.
This matchup looks to be the biggest of the whole group stages with both the sides arguably the two most fancied teams heading into the tournament.
South Africa have named just one change to the 23 that held New Zealand in Wellington to a 16-16 stalemate back in July on their route to lifting the Rugby Championship.
That player to come in is captain Siya Kolisi, who has been hugely influential to their setup and that’s only going to make them stronger.
Steve Hansen will no doubt be going hell for leather in this one too and given no side has ever won the World Cup having lost a group stage fixture, we could a much better idea after the 80 minutes of who’ll eventual lift the William Web Ellis Cup.
Head-Head In World Cups
Never before have these two sides played each other at the group stage and for good reason, seeing as they’re usually both within the top four of the rankings making it impossible to be drawn against one another.
However, when the draw was made back in May 2017 the Springboks were down in seventh in the World, therefore setting up this fixture.
They still have met at World Cups previously in the knockout rounds and interestingly the scores are settled at two apiece, as three of those saw fewer than five points separate them.
In fact, this matchup is still just as close now as their three meetings since the start of 2018 (W1-D1-L1) have seen fewer than three points settle each of them with the aggregate scoreline at 82-82.
Boks Looking To Half World Cup Winning Streak
Obviously, the Kiwis are on a record-breaking streak of 14 straight World Cup victories, but they’ve had their fair amount of luck along the way and Rassie Erasmus’s men look capable of stopping that.
Indeed, they would’ve inflicted back-to-back victories on the All blacks had they not blown away a 17-point lead with just 20 minutes to go in Pretoria at the end of last year, although they followed that up nicely this year with a draw at Eden Park.
South Africa +5 Point Handicap
From a betting perspective we can’t separate these two sides and so we’re going to have to get behind South Africa on the handicap given the respective prices. A five-point head start for the African side at evens looks a solid bet.
Cheslin Kolbe Anytime Tryscorer
Another betting angle we like is for the fleet footed Cheslin Kolbe to get over the whitewash. The winger has done exactly that in two of his three matches against the All Blacks since the start of last year and add the fact he has three tries from his last two matches, including a brace against Japan last time out, he looks good value to touchdown again.
