Easy Path For United
Man Utd may have their problems competing domestically, but on paper, there appears to be an easy route through to the knockouts in Europe.
An opening day victory away at Astana, combined with a draw between likely challengers AZ Alkmaar and Partizan Belgrade, has left them sitting pretty at the top of Group L.
However, it should be noted that the Red Devils’ 1-0 success in Kazakhstan was the very least expected of them, with such a limited output not just a one-off problem for Solskjaer.
United have failed to score more than a single strike in any of their last eight fixtures now, even when facing League One outfit Rochdale with Paul Pogba on the field, while Anthony Martial remains sidelined with a thigh complaint.
Rashford’s Form Questionable
In Martial’s absence, Marcus Rashford has had the opportunity to cement himself as first choice striker from a central position. However, the 21-year-old’s poor form has seen his status reduced as he’s failed to live up to the hype of a few years ago and it remains unclear what exactly his best position is.
His latest display against Arsenal on Monday night only served as confirmation that letting Romelu Lukaku leave without an adequate replacement was utter folly, even if the burly Belgian didn’t fit the tactical template favoured by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Mason Greenwood In The Frame
The need for firepower should see Mason Greenwood move to the front of the queue, with the recently turned 18-year-old looking a hugely promising prospect in his limited appearances so far. Mostly he’s had to make do with cameos from the bench, but he’s scored in both games he’s started this season and certainly unsettled Arsenal in his 16 minutes on the pitch on Monday.
However, given the way United are playing at the moment, combined with the fact that AZ Alkmaar have just kept three consecutive clean sheets, we’d avoid backing one of the visitors’ contingent to find the net.

Man Utd are just W2-D4-L2 over their past eight fixtures and they definitely appear worth taking on up against the Dutch outfit, who find themselves in good form at present.

It’s also significant that Man Utd’s only wins this season have come at Old Trafford. Indeed, their away form is abysmal going back into March now, as they’ve lost six of nine winless road trips since their heroic comeback in Paris at the high point of Solskjaer’s reign. With that in mind, the hosts draw no bet are a tantalising prospect.
