Recent Form

A blasted effort from Marcus Alonso was enough for Chelsea to grind out a 1-0 result over Newcastle at the weekend and they’ll have had one eye on this next fixture with Ajax for some time now. A win this Wednesday would see them go joint-top of Group H and that’ll no doubt be the aim with qualification still anyone’s for the taking.

The Dutch outfit were a little touch go in qualifying as a 5-4 aggregate scoreline over Greek side PAOK, followed by a 2-0 success over two legs against Cypriots Apoel Nicosia, saw them through to this stage, but nonetheless they still got the job done and have been utterly relentless since earning their spot in the group stages.

Indeed, they’ve won nine of 10 unbeaten matches in all competitions since late August by an aggregate scoreline of 28-3. Of course, seven of those outings came against domestic Eredivisie sides, but they’ve still won two of their three unbeaten outings across their toughest tests in that time versus Lille (3-0), PSV (1-1) and Valencia (3-0).

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard’s men have now won five games on the bounce in all tournaments, as their only defeats since that opening day schooling at Old Trafford have come against Liverpool (2-1) and Valencia (1-0), both coming at Stamford Bridge.

That is an impressive record for the new manager, but this looks to be his toughest task since that defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s men back in September, so they’ll need to be at the top of their game to come away with anything.

There has been a mixed bag of results from English teams travelling to Holland over the last decade, as they’ve gone W4-D4-L4 from 12 trips, with as many as eight seeing the sides level at the break.

Indeed, the hosts may be regarded as the better side after their exploits last term, but they’ll already be conscious of their clash with Feyenoord at the weekend and although the fellow Dutch team have been below par this term, they still remain their fiercest rivals.

Erik ten Hag will want to win De Klassieker for the fans and maintain their three-point lead at the head of the table.

Ajax And Chelsea To Draw

The hosts delivered time and again on their travels in Europe during their semi-final effort last season, but weren’t quite so convincing at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The run saw them win just three of six encounters here from the group stages onwards as both Real Madrid and Spurs beat them, while they were unable to beat Juve or Bayern either as they had to settle for draws.

At the current prices, we’re more inclined to get behind a Blues outfit that have won four back-to-back matches on the road, two of which were by exactly three strikes, while they even held Liverpool to a stalemate in the Super Cup final in Istanbul prior to that.

That said, it’s hard to see the hosts coming away pointless seeing as they’re yet to do so this campaign from 17 outings and the draw looks the value option.

0.5 Pts: Draw At 13/5
