Aberdeen would fancy themselves as best of the rest in Scotland behind the Old Firm duo having finished somewhere between 2nd and 4th in each of the past six campaigns under Derek McInnes.
A win over third-placed Motherwell last weekend helped rein them in and they now sit just one point behind their opponents that day, though third in the table will be the height of Aberdeen’s league ambitions this season.
Indeed, given the improvements made at Rangers under Steven Gerrard, there’s now considerable distance between the Old Firm duo and everyone else.
The Gers demonstrated that superiority over Aberdeen when handing them a 5-0 tanking at Ibrox at the end of last month, while the Dons have hardly excelled when encountering Celtic in recent times.
Last season, the Hoops won five of six unbeaten head-to-heads across all competitions, while they’ve won without conceding in seven of 10 meetings since 2017/18.

Derek McInnes’ team have actually lost by a minimum margin of two goals in four of their past five matches hosting the Celts, conceding an average of three per game across these.
Twelve of Aberdeen’s last 14 defeats at Pittodrie since April 2017 against anyone have come by at least two goals, and we can see this game following the pattern.
