Conte The Right Man For The Job - Teddy Sheringham Exclusive

Antonio Conte is the new man in charge at Tottenham, and Spurs great Teddy Sheringham predicts big things are on the horizon under his stewardship. Following the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo after just four months in charge, the North London club needed to get their next appointment spot on. In Conte they have hired a serial winner who has picked up titles in both England and Italy as a manager – including the most recent Serie A crown with Inter Milan. And the former Spurs striker believes the ex-Chelsea boss will bring a sea change in N17.

Change Predicted

Speaking exclusively to Genting earlier this week, he said: “Conte needs to go in there full of enthusiasm, that’s the way he works, it is all about enthusiasm and 100% commitment.

“When he goes in there, I can imagine, giving his first meeting on Wednesday, he’ll have all that bubbly, infectious character with ‘This is how we’re going to approach games, this

is how I want you flying into games.’

“And you should see a massive change in everybody’s demeanour as soon as they’re walking onto the pitch and attacking that first five or ten minutes in their next game.

“But the team’s approach will mirror Conte’s personality; infectious, enthusiastic, 100% commitment, desire on the pitch, and then your attributes come through after that.

“I can see a massive change coming around from Tottenham in the next two or three games – I think (appointing Conte is) the best appointment since Mauricio Pochettino.”

High Expectations

As Sheringham suggested, Spurs flew straight out of the traps in Conte’s first game in charge on Thursday night, going 3-0 up against Vitesse within half an hour of their Europa Conference League clash.

But with a world-class manager now in the dugout, the man with 277 Tottenham appearances under his belt knows supporters will have bigger expectations than a victory in UEFA’s third-tier of competition.

“Tottenham are ninth in the league and they’re only two points behind Arsenal who are supposedly having a fantastic season at the moment,” he said.

“Arsenal fans are seemingly delighted with Arteta right now and yet they’re only two points in front of Spurs.

“That’s where the two different standards are at the moment in North London, but Tottenham are clearly unhappy with where they are and needed to change things.”

Bigger Picture

However, Sheringham knows there is a much larger picture than simply finishing above their local rivals.

“That alone is not good enough, but yes that is something to aim for that will please the fans,” he explained.

“I would think Conte will be looking to get into the Champions League, without a doubt, that’s his desire.

“Once you get on a roll these days, you can move up the league very, very quickly and

there’s a long way to go, but he’s a winner.

“He’ll be wanting to win things as well, so even if it is the Conference League, he’ll want to win that.

“Tottenham fans would love to get to Wembley – the FA Cup Final, and win the FA Cup, because this is what football is all about – winning things.

“Hopefully now we’ve got a winner in charge, that’s where he’s going to take us and get back into the Champions League football as well.”

Infectious Conte

Having a playing career that spanned three decades, Sheringham played under countless different managers, from Sir Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough to Terry Venables and Harry Redknapp.

But the 51-cap England international believes that he would have enjoyed playing under the new Spurs boss.

He said: “I liked infectious people and he looks like he wears his heart on his sleeve and he wants the players to go out there and give their all, and as long as you do that, I’ll back you.

“He looks like a good manager to me.”
